Linkedin

So since I am on a role with the whole thing of promoting myself as a fashion photographer, to also get  myself know and out there.
From a fellow photography student Azra she was telling me how some work has came out of joining Linkedin so I thought why not!
Here is my profile and hopefully something will come of it.

Makeup Course Research.

After I have completed the photography course, hair and make-up has always been a passion of mine. So instead of ruling it out completely why not add it to my degree.
With wanting to be a fashion photographer and having make-up skills is an added bonus you can build the whole shoot from scratch exactly how you want it. Also in the industry having an extra skill such as this is very useful!
When looking at a few available courses it lists what will be taught, few of these I actually already know how to do stated in red next to the skills some I don't know of a professional level. So after leaving the course my first aim is to get a qualification in Make-up!

Facebook

I finally did it, made a page on Facebook with photography work up.
What was holding me back was the thought of no one wanting to look at it, or liking the page however I have sent messages, comments and used the power of Twitter to hopefully get my page noticed.
Not only to get some form of business but to put myself out there as a fashion photographer building greater networks.
Its no good just having all my friends on Facebook like it, as they already know about me and what I do, I need there friends and so on, people who don't know me to build some great contacts.

So I will be using my Blog to document any further work gained from my Facebook page.

Sadie Sadie Sadie

With beautiful weather I grabbed the opportunity to yet do another shoot, this one was rescheduled and luckily the day was perfect!
Sadie is studying art, event and performance so is confident and use to eyes all being on her. She responded to my Status on Facebook wanting female models for my work, I asked the same question I have to all models 'Due to high demands in the fashion industry what is stopping you being a model?' not only these girls want to be models main issues are weight and height and for Sadie she wouldn't be tall enough.
Still not having a make-up artist as I felt like it was too much hassle arranging a date for her to come round and then cancel and holding all my shoots back I thought it was better to press on. For this shoot I decided on simple light make-up with statement lips. The outfits for the shoots were pretty bold so personally I felt that dramatic make-up wouldn't go well.
With again the weather being beautiful all was used is natural lighting.
In certain areas I found it quite difficult as the sun was too harsh, I hated the shadows once I saw them in the images I couldn't stop looking at them causing a great distraction so had to move the model into different positions to hide the shadow and to get a nice light on her face.
Every time I pressed the shutter my model moved into different positions showing me that Sadie took this very serious and would be good in the industry however when it came to selecting a few images as all was slightly different this made it much more difficult.
Sadie was very confident and by far one of the best models I have used other than the last shoot as she made it much easier for myself as the photographer with not having to direct her as much.

Valley Gardens

I was contacted by another girl who wanted to help out with my work, this was through seeing a status on Facebook wanting female models.
Colette Butler, when looking at her pictures she has a unique fashion style and look to her so I thought she would be perfect for a shoot towards my negotiated study.
With being a slim size 8 what is the thing that's stopping her to be a model? Height! Colette is 5ft 4, so the aim during the shoot was to make her look taller.
Maybe some will think otherwise but I think I achieved this with the outfit choices to extenuate her legs and camera angles I would say she looks very tall!
It was a beautiful day, the only source of light I used was natural. Putting the model in different positions to create nice lighting on the face and body, offering to got back to my family home to get dressed and do the make-up the model wasn't fussed and we made all the preparations in the location of the shoot.
After a few outfit changes in Valley Gardens in Pontefract the police approached asking questions as to what is going on, I explained and they both wished us luck, that panicked me when I saw them coming towards us!
Over all I think the shoot went very well, the model was brilliant and confident. Perfect for my work.

The Shoot

When the model arrived to my flat she was all fresh faced and ready for me to do her make-up, normally I am pretty relaxed about doing the hair and make-up myself but because it was promised a make-up artist was going to be doing it I felt like I had to do something more adventurous and was worried it was going to go wrong.
Luckily it didn't, the YouTube video was playing in the back ground even though her eye make-up doesn't look exactly like how the professional did it, I felt like I gave it a very good go and suited the model so at least it looked the part.
When heading out for the shoot the sky was quite dull, my aim on this shoot was to use triggers and a soft box for the lighting but unfortunately my flash needs to be set off by another Cannon Speedlite flash gun so was unable to use the lighting the way I wanted.
I got my assistant to stand behind me with the soft box and I pointed my flash backwards so I could still use it as a reflector.
The girl used for the shoot contacted me after seeing my advert about needing female models who wouldn't really make it in the fashion industry due to not tall enough, slim enough etc.
Livy is very tall, well next to me she seems it and when looking at her figure I personally would say its perfect however in the fashion industry they wouldn't argue about this they would just class her as a plus size model even though through my eyes I would say she is a perfect size to be a normal run way model (what do I know eh).
So my aim on this photo shoot was to make her look her absolute best and focus on areas which complimented her.
Later on in the shoot she became more confident when changing outfits, you can see this through my pictures as they look better and the sun came out so turned off my flash and used natural lighting.
We experimented going to different areas with a grunge look to them to contrast against the model.

Make-up

A shoot is organized for tomorrow!
I have my model, the equipment and I did have the make-up artist El Marsh however she sent me an email saying she isn't 100% and if we could re-arrange the shoot. Of course I said yes that's fine which it is, but with me being pushed for time the shoot must go on.
To be honest I was really looking forward to a professional doing the make-up guess it will have to happen on another shoot.
So since I still want this new set of images to have a edge about them and like always it will be be doing the hair and make-up, to brush up on what skills I have this YouTube video below is what I aim the make-up to look like tomorrow. Not having time to practice this fingers crossed it will go as planned also if I pull this off their will be no need for make-up artists and can learn myself to create high end fashion make-up!

Personal Goals

What I want to achieve when I finish my degree at Leeds City College, is have a good portfolio based around fashion photography.
With my previous course (foundation degree) being commercial and the way it was structured as students we didn't have much freedom to create our own briefs and link to university work. To pass the course we had to do set briefs and have certain pictures. When I left that course I didn't have much fashion work or explored as much as I wanted to. However this course has enabled me to be more creative and do something I actually want to do. I need to continue to take pictures for who ever needs them such as weddings and events to get my name out, gain the experience and money. After I feel like I have gained enough experience, built great networks and have a solid income then I would solely just do fashion photography.
I know where I want to get, and how I am going to get there.
Knowing it will take a great deal of time but with the strive to succeed I will get there and eventually be working with a good team and be a fashion photographer.
'To be a photographer you needs a great deal of patients and money' said Tony O'Connel (professional photographer) and I'm a pretty impatient person so I am hoping this will motivate me more to get myself out their and be more productive outside and after the course has finished!

Emily Soto

I came across an inspirational American fashion photographer called Emily Soto. On YouTube she shows a behind the scenes with a lot of her shoots.
The reason why I started to research on YouTube, as I thought by looking at some photographers behind the scenes I could see how they lit the shots and what they used to light the shots.
In many of Emily Soto's shoots based outside seems to be lit with one light and some help from the sun can lead to a great shoot. With a great natural location she shoots a simple and gorgeous fashion shoot.
I find her work beautiful and inspiring. I especially like the contrast in colours with the graffiti on the wall in the video above.
About Emily: 'She is a professional fashion, portrait and people photographer residing in Southern California. She is passionate about photography, art and fashion and loves combining them into one phenomenal piece.'

Mid Night Shoot

After having discussions in class about different lighting techniques and having a workshop showing us how to light different situations.
I thought it would be a good idea to have an experiment myself, but having a go at taking pictures in the dark.
It was spur of the moment and dragging my best friend out to be a model at mid night to take pictures.
With not having the correct lighting equipment I just used my flash, at first I found it difficult to take pictures as the lighting looked to harsh on the model, and to be honest I didn't really know what to expect of this shoot and how I wanted the final images so it seemed like I was shooting blindly.
It was getting cold and I was getting fed up, all I thought was "oh well it's only an experiment" but I positioned my flash so it hit the wall behind me, and lit the model beautifully. I was shocked as I didn't expect that to happen. So took a few more pictures before heading in.
When looking at them on the computer little editing needed to be done, the lighting looked great and the composition of the whole image worked very well.

InThe Blink Of An Eye- Media & Movement

At the National Media Museum based in Bradford which is currently holding an exhibition called 'in the blink of an eye'. Showing the relationship between media and movement, revealing how artists, photographers, inventors and scientists have captured movement.
I found this work very interesting as it was presented as photography and in more practical ways of showing movement.

'There are no such things as moving images, they are an illusion created by our brains'.
The work was displayed on two floors the bottom showing movement in practical ways and the other floor showing movement within photography and still life pictures.

I sneakily took a few videos to demonstrate how movement was shown through the exhibition.

When looking around at the photography work which was displayed in thick black frames with a cardboard boarder which was quite thick with the image in the centre. Each photograph had an explanation and a bar code that you could scan with your phone for extra information on the work. Displaying old work with a twist of modern technology. Whilst viewing the work quite a few images I had seen before such as Harold Egerton 'Milk drop coronet 1957'. Photography can speed up or slow down time. High-speed and time lapse photography enables us to see events too fast or too slow for the naked eye, revealing a hidden world of extraordinary beauty.
Harold Egerton was the first to take high-speed colour photographs and was a pioneer of multi-flash and microsecond imagery.'In many ways, unexpected results are what have most inspired my photography'- Harold Egerton.
Another image by this photographer exhibited which I found interesting is the one below, this image show each stage of movement but all in the same frame making ti seem like the man has multiple arms this shows a different type of movement, unlike the milk drop and capturing that movement this image is meant to look like the man wasn't stationary whilst the picture was being taken.

The Gallery at Flannels (round three)

Once again I was asked to take pictures at the gallery above Flannels Fashion Store.
This particular exhibition had hand painted  posters alongside many other dedicated artists and musicians.
To go along with all the fantastic and very interesting posters a band was also playing called 'Art Cowboys', who were amazing and brought a nice vibe with a relaxed and fun feeling to bring an end to the night.
Many posted dated far back from 1968 with a hand painted one off poster by Bill Nelson and other work was from present day art students.
The posters were so interesting I couldn't stop looking at them, all the time and effort put into advertising different things and the colours used which made them visually pleasing.
What was once a just means of promoting a product, in this case a band or artist, is now a celebration of drawings of quirky and interesting designs.
When taking pictures of this event it was more or less the same as my past two experiences of documenting the exhibitions at Flannels, the lighting was the same, the space used and the brief given.
As I have been doing this event for free the past few times I have decided to no longer document the exhibitions held here and to give someone else the experience as I found that it wasn't a challenge and I wasn't learning anything from it where as it could be more useful for other photographers who need a bit of experience.
With the work being posters and not photography there isn't I right lot I can say about the work other than the posters were brilliant, very eye catching. All displayed in different sizes with thick frames and presented on blank off white walls.

Ok here I go...

After Jess had some advice into making and advert on Gumtree and she was telling me about how she has heard from people, even though its not exactly what she wanted people are contacting her that are interested in what she is doing.
I thought that I might as well have a go, explaining why I need the models and someone to do hair for the shoots and hopefully some people might be interested. It was made it clear that I want female models and the ages they need to be.
If I don’t hear anything it was worth a try and if I do let the shooting commence.

make-up at the ready!

I have stumbled across El Marsh, who is a fantastic make-up artist who wants to expand her portfolio; here are a few pictures of her current work.
In a few weeks time I am hoping to be working with her on fashion shoots toward my negotiated study.
I have always done my own hair and make-up for the models on shoots so I am very excited to be working with El, and seeing what she can do which will hopefully take my images to a whole different level. Really looking forward to working with her and putting a different edge on my pictures.

Focus on Imaging

Noticing a poster round campus about a trip to Focus on Imaging and its only £2 to go, well I couldn’t find an excuse not to!
I have been before previously and in total spending £10 to get in and £5 for the coach it was an extremely long and boring day however we only got short of 3 hours to look around which I thought was a perfect amount of time.
I applied online as a photographer so I was able to get in the event for free, and being on a coach with different photography students which was a few years younger than me was very interesting. How they looked at things differently, approached things and how they acted in general, quite amusing actually. As the coach stopped for a break one girl rushed off with her camera to take a picture of an old man with a walking stick on her black and white film camera. To be stood a decent distance away but close enough for him to know and never asked permission to take his picture which amused me knowing my luck if that was me I would have got shooed off or smacked with the walking stick.
Finally arriving we had a quick look round because the main aim for me and Jess was to find Lara Jade. She was doing a talk at 1;00pm but it wasn’t down on the guide book, looking all over the place for it we had given up hope and on our way to another talk by Jayce Clarke and the secrets of off-camera flash. But on our way and being extremely nosey I went over to this large group of people to be all stood around waiting for the talk by Lara Jade, so shouting Jess to come over we listened to her talking about her experiences over the years as a fashion photographer, what she has done to get to where she has.
When looking at her work and hearing her talk about her journey she was so inspirational from a young age she took brilliant fashion photographs doing self portraits so she could learn techniques and get confidence with her work and the technical side before approaching other people to be in the shots.
She has a fantastic eye the way she edits her pictures are breath taking and the colours and composition of her images just go really well together.
Personally one of my favorite images by Lara Jade
Lara using mainly natural light for her images and states she hasn’t got her own style as she is going with the trends and always learning as really good to hear. As before I have been asked what is your style and it’s really hard to answer that and felt like I need to have one by now but to hear this from someone as successful as her was a relief. However at my age she was producing ten million times better pictures than me and doing a lot more work so its made me think I need to pull my finger out. She is inspirational and made me remember why I want to do fashion photography!

Portfolio review

I had been dreading this day for a couple of weeks now and the day came along the portfolio Review.
Two successful photographers were arrange to sit with us individually going through our portfolio, as if in the real world and was going for an interview to prepare us and able us to improve.
The interview consisted of a 10 minute interview in front of two the photographers, Ian Beesley and Tony O'Connell showing my work what best represents me as a photographer and where I want to go after the course.

Chosen by both photographers as strongest image

Of course I was the first to have an interview and due to traffic Ian Beesley was over an hour late, which made me even more nervous and with it only being a ten minute slot it put everyone behind so the class were getting nervous.

As I didn’t know until I approached the room that Ian was late I sat down with my pictures in a black portfolio box, made a couple of notes just in case as I didn’t know what to expect and I got chatting to Tony O’Connell off the record as he called it, which made me feel a lot more comfortable he was telling me about his past experiences of having interviews for jobs in the past, asking information about myself which I tried not to repeat in the actual interview, no one really wants to hear things twice.
Finally Mr Beesley turned up and I got called to come down for my review. Extremely nervous as I didn’t know what they were going to say or how they would be I sat down and shook both photographers’ hands then started to pull my work out one by one.
Personally I think the interview went great, two nice photographers don’t even know why I was so scared. They gave me some great advice and I felt totally comfortable didn’t even need to look at any notes!

One of Ian Beesley's favorite images.
The advice I was given were instead of having lots of pictures pick your 6 strongest ones, that compliment one another than putting a variety in and some are a lot stronger than others and would make it a solid portfolio. Instead of showing them what I thought they wanted to see, show them what I want them to see!
Both photographers asked what I thought were my strongest then I returned the question as I wanted there opinion then asking my weakest because sometimes you need someone else to tell you so you can let it go.

The feedback I got from the photographers:
Both Ian and Tony were impressed with your presentation, images and knowledge of your subject areas. On the whole they suggested that you need to edit your images down to a more concise set – both myself and Phil suggest that you take this on board and create more images in this style. We suggest 10 to 15 images in total – these must be excellent, outstanding etc…

The feedback I got from my tutors:
Katie good start
You discussed your freelance practice well and business acumen.
Well received ideas and warmed to the panel.
You have a very warm and humorous but professional approach.
Able to talk about skills and strengths.
Explained the negotiated study very well.
Perhaps your portfolio needs to be wider ranging – don’t put everything in and don’t talk about being asked to undertake certain tasks. Perhaps the Wakefield course was a little formulaic, be a free thinker and include work you are happy with not what you have been told to produce.
Answered questions well but how truthful we're you (see above comment)?
As Ian suggested less is more.  Think about sequence of portfolio.

Which I found very helpful and hopefully my next one will go just as good but be better.

Mr and Mrs Nash

Fortunately for friends and family knowing someone who does photography is a bonus, especially when it comes to weddings.
We all know weddings are very expensive and what you pay for is what you get.
I was approached by my best friend Emily asking how I would feel about taking the pictures for her mum’s wedding.
Obviously I couldn’t say no for a few reasons, good opportunity, earn a little bit of money and it being my best friend’s mother.
I were told that Anne had meetings with other photographers before realizing they could ask me and when coming up with a suitable price as being put in that awkward situation of how much to charge a friend don’t want to say too little or too much, I asked how much the other photographers wanted and why they decided to not go with them.
Main reason was money, both photographers wanted to charge £500 and the couple was not willing to pay that amount as it was only a small wedding and need a photographer for 3 hours.
After discussing what the couple wanted out of the day I offered to charge a sum of £275, I know this doesn’t seem much but as a photographer and a family friend I couldn’t bring myself to charge more.

For this wedding I found of the exact times and things they wanted photographing and created a plan:-
Anne Harding & Graham Vinncet Nash
17th February
Wentbridge House
12; 15pm – Look at the set up room, take few test shots.
12; 30pm - Go to bridal room capture images of bride and daughter getting ready.
1; 00pm -Picture of all the girls invited to the room and separate ones of family members.
1; 40pm - Meet with the registrar
2; 00pm - Wedding
2; 10pm - Signing of the register
2; 20pm - Picture of the guest leaving the room in couples after bride and groom depart.
2; 35pm - Images of bride and groom outside and group shots.
2; 50pm - Cutting of the cake.
3; 00pm – final shot of entire group before dinner.

Wedding breakfast starts at 3; 15pm. (job done)

5 images at 8x12
Book with all pictures in
Disk with all the images on.

On the actual day I was so nervous it was untrue, only doing one wedding ever before it was safe to say I was scared. The night before was the worst night sleep I’ve had in ages, and waking extremely early worried my alarm wouldn’t go off. I even had porridge for breakfast… I hate porridge however I knew it would make me last until the wedding was over and not be hungry.
With the bride and groom knowing me already, it made them very comfortable at front of the camera and very easy to direct them. Although when the other guest started to arrive wanting pictures such as all the girls in the bridal sweet it was slightly more difficult.
This being because not knowing peoples names and trying to politely position them as two in particular ladies didn’t really want to be in the shot and hiding behind others.
Also with the group shot outside I found this difficult too, making sure everyone is looking, eyes open and not hiding but I managed.
The day went very smoothly, the area where the ceremony was being held then later the reception had a giant glass roof over where the bride and groom were stood which lit them beautifully and made the room very bright. When I first saw that window on the roof I was amazed and knew my pictures would have good lighting.

However the lesson I have learnt is take a few memory cards because with me being a complete idiot my camera was set to capturing the images in RAW and JPEG, so I had two copies of everything giving me very little space on my card, then to realize half way through then changing it to just RAW, your question is why I have it set on both… my answer is not a clue and didn’t even notice. I have been planning on buying more memory cards as it’s obviously very useful.

Of course then it was time to go through processing stage, get prints, and create a book.
After processing I put all 100 images onto a disk and went round to the newly wed couples house so they were able to select what 5 images they wanted to be printed out, look through disk of image to see if they are happy with them and for all of them to go into the book as I didn’t want to create a book and a picture be in there that they didn’t like.
Mr & Mrs Nash was so happy with the pictures, selected the 5 they wanted and was happy with all the images to be put into a book. They stated how I made their day very special and couldn’t stop saying thank you.
Which then made me happy; the pressure of weddings is a nightmare. Not wanting to spoil their day, being there every step capturing the special moments it was a big relief that the couple was happy.

The wedding book was created on blurb I also paid a bit extra to get rid of the blurb logo, to put my own there.
Its all about presentation, I bought a beautiful box, got white tissue paper and propped the book inside with pink rose petals and wrapping the 5 printed images in tissue paper and fixing them into the lid. Arranging to meet to give them the book and prints they were overwhelmed and extremely happy and again that made me happy!

John Angerson

John Angerson a successful documentary photographer came to Leeds City College as a guest speaker.
He presented his work through a power point going through each image and telling its story as well has handing around a book he created from his earlier work.

Angerson was the age of 13 when he first started photography, he lent a friends camera and started to become more and more interested.
Getting a BTech in graphic design he then decided that photography was the path for him.
Working for local newspapers and magazines to get some money alongside doing his own personal projects and becoming slightly obsessed with them (his words).

Angerson started to document the Jesus cult from the age of 17 and going back at least 3 times a year for 20 years. Becoming one with the people he was documenting, gaining there trust and understanding what they do and why they do it and after all them years coming out with excellent images and creating a book.

A question was brought up during Q&A asking what makes him different from a tourist as some of his recent work he went traveling and documenting his journey.
I was really offended by this question, even though Angerson took it very well and answered it as well as he could I just wanted to tell this girl to shut up! What makes him different is a tourist documenting there holiday or snapping pictures as they go along, there is some form of planning in his images or discovering different ways of looking at things. Such as the image below someone else other than a photographer wouldn’t see the back end of a limo through some big iron gates thinking ‘oh this is a fantastic image’ they would run off chasing after the limo trying to get the entire car in the shot.

Another example the next image below, if a tourist was in that situation they would be trying to get the scene around trying to avoid the police car that is what makes Angerson different my friend!

I found his work very interesting especially how successful he is, taking pictures of celebrities also his knowledge about photography and the passion he has even if he states that he becomes slightly obsessive which personally I wouldn’t say was a bad thing.

Link to his website for more fantastic images http://www.johnangerson.com/
